Fire Incident caused by loose neutral wire in well known sports mall in India
This incident happened in well know multi location Sport mall in Northern Part of India where a loose neutral wire caused a fire incident.
The loose wiring resulted in neutral open condition, due to which there was reverse supply of 230V in neutral wire resulting in 440V in one of the phases. A very well known and top branded Online UPS got damaged and got burnt. Short circuit protections like MCB tripped after the fire had already spread and burnt most of the facility.
All other connected Equipment also got Damaged. What was interesting about the incident was that there was no voltage problem in the area. The problem started because of loose neutral wiring. The voltage condition will persist until the fault is corrected.
All electrical consultants and contractor are aware of this condition, but there was no effective solution that they knew about. Online UPS are generally HF type and get damaged very easily. They may have internal UV/ OV protections but these protections also get damaged if subjected to 440V. When internal components get damaged, what transpires is Shortcircuit condition. The MCBs will trip after short circuit and by that time possibly the fire will spread. If not attended in time, the whole premises will be up in flames.
How to avoid such incidents?
